In association with the Nordic Museum, The Seattle Theatre Group is showing two Nordic silent films during their Silent Movie Mondays series.

The 1929 Danish/German film Laila will run on February 25; the 1917 Swedish film A Man There Was/Erje Vigen will play May 6.

A MAN THERE WAS/TERJE VIGEN (1917), directed by Victor Sjöström, is based on an epic poem by Henrik Ibsen and commonly cited as the film that launched Sweden’s first golden age of filmmaking. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, it tells the story of a fisherman so desperate to obtain food for his starving family that he tries to break through a British blockade, only to find himself at the mercy of extraordinary forces. The stunning cinematography captures the harsh unforgiving quality of the ever-present sea. Sjöström would later have a notable career in Hollywood. Musical accompaniment by Tedde Gibson on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ.
