Summer 2021 Virtual Folk School Series: Weaving- The Coverlets of Norway

  August 22, 2021 @ 10:00 am | HOSTED BY: National Nordic Museum

10:00 am | Cost: $5 – $8

Online

This class is a part of a summer-long series. You do not need materials or supplies for these classes.

Warm covers at night are essential during a Nordic winter, but the coverlets families used to place on their bedsteads were often highly decorative as well. Join Katherine Larson, author of The Woven Coverlets of Norway, as she describes many of the bed covers once commonly found in Norwegian homes. You’ll become acquainted with a variety of coverlet types, learn some weaving basics, and see a demonstration of several coverlet techniques. From delicate christening coverlets to practical fishermen’s ryas, the coverlets provide a window into the folk culture of Norway, while the simple yet decorative techniques instill an appreciation for the skilled housewife weavers of centuries past.

Cost: $5 for Members; $8 general admission
