Join us for a Nordic film series exploring the dreams, challenges, and struggles of immigrants both then and now, from the time of the Great Migration to contemporary Scandinavia.

The New Land (Nybyggarna, 1973) stars the two greats Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann as Karl-Oskar and Kristina. In Jan Troell’s second film based on Vilhelm Moberg’s classic emigrant novel series, we follow the saga of a Swedish immigrant family from Småland struggling to establish a new life for themselves in the forest of Minnesota in the mid-19th century.

In Swedish with English subtitles. There will be an introduction prior to the film and a discussion following.
