Join us for a Nordic film series exploring the dreams, challenges, and struggles of immigrants both then and now, from the time of the Great Migration to contemporary Scandinavia.

Bille August’s epic drama Pelle the Conqueror (Pelle erobreren, 1987) is the story of the boy Pelle, who comes to Danish island of Bornholm from Sweden in search of a better life at the end of the 19th century. His aging father is played by the legendary Swedish actor Max von Sydow. They find work on a large farm but are demeaned and harassed as outsiders, yet they continue to dream of finding a better life.

In Danish and Swedish with English subtitles. There will be an introduction prior to the film and a discussion following.
